  Helensburgh, Argyll

Helensburgh Sea Front - taken from the pier

Helensburgh is situated on the River Clyde approximately 20 miles north west of Glasgow - it is an elegant Victorian town with a beautiful level promenade, a pier (where you can find local ferries taking you to Greenock/Port Glasgow and Kilcreggan), an unusual range of individual shops - (not too many chain stores here!) - and the largest selection of coffee shops on the north Clyde shore!!

Helensburgh was planned as a very modern town - the inspiration for its name came from Helen - wife of Sir Ivor Colquhoun; he created a town which would be accessible from Glasgow for the wealthy merchants of the day, so that their families could escape the heat in the summer months in their splended Victorian villas.

Helensburgh residents these days tend to commute to Glasgow to work - although there are many people living and working from home, taking advantage of the good infrastructure including broadband access and good rail and bus links to Glasgow and the Highlands.  Helensburgh is only 25 minutes away from Glasgow Airport.
