The Mound Luckenbooth Brooch in Sterling Silver

They take their name from the stalls or booths, where they were on sale, near St. Giles, in Edinburgh, the luken from locking or else look in. They were usually given as a token of love, much as an engagement ring is today and often used as a talisman to ward off evil.

It is said that young men would give a luckenbooth brooch on his engagement to his fiancee; it was pinned onto the shawl of the first-born to ward off evil spirits.

This sterling silver brooch measures 35mm X 25mm.
