Soap making has been going on in some form for thousands of years. There is evidence dating back to around 2800BC when the Babylonians, Mesopotamians and Egyptians made soaps by mixing fat, oils and salts. These were likely to have been used for washing cooking implements rather than personal care. Thankfully, Soap making has come a long way since then! With better, more refined ingredients as well as interesting shapes, packaging and fragrances. At Scottish Fine Soaps we’ve been making luxury soap since our inception in 1974 and it is something we take a lot of pride in. We use a vegetable base for our soaps along with other top quality ingredients, each selected for their performance, safety and stability.
You might have noticed the phrase “Triple Milled” on our soap packaging and wondered what this means. Triple milling is a process that can only be done effectively in commercial manufacturing with specialised machinery. Firstly all the soap ingredients are churned together. This mix is then rolled out to just a few millimetres thick using heavyweight steel rollers. This process is repeated three times. This extreme pressure exerted by the steel rollers ensures that the mixture is well blended and extremely dense. This density is the main reason why our soap bars should never crumble or turn “sludgy”- even at the very end of the bar.
You might also have noticed the term “superfatted” on our soap packaging our website. When a soap is “superfatted” it simply means it is infused with extra fats – this often takes the form of Shea Butter, Coccoa Butter or Essential Oils. This process ensures an excess of oils which are released as the soap is used, giving it extra moisturising and emollient properties.
