Turned Beechwood Porridge Spurtle

Make porridge the traditional way - as it cooks stir the porridge gently with this lovely turned beechwood spurtle.

As a youngster, it took a wee while to persuade me to eat porridge.  It looked grey and uninviting.  Then we went to stay with our aunts for a holiday.  In the old-fashioned kitchen there was a lovely warm Aga range cooker;  each morning, Auntie M would make porridge in a solid cast-iron pan, stirring it with an ancient spurtle.  I guess I became nosy because I would often find myself standing at her elbow, watching what she was doing.  Then, one day, she said "Would you like to stir the porridge" - and so my love-affair with porridge started.

I can still smell the porridge cooking, feel the weight (and it was really heavy) of the pan and I can still see Auntie M measuring out the water and the porridge oats and adding a pinch of salt.  As the porridge cooked, she had a breakfast bowl warming on the edge of the cooker so that the porridge would keep hot for longer.  It didn't take long for me to ask to taste the porridge I was helping to cook ...  although, I must confess, I would sit on her knee to eat it!  What a great way to start the day.

I wouldn't dream of making porridge without using our ancient spurtle which was handed down to me after she passed away.
